I'm not flexible at all. Does that mean yoga isn't for me?
Absolutely not! Yoga enhances flexibility with regular practice. Poses lengthen muscles and open areas of the body where blockages and tension result from habitual behaviors (driving, working at a computer). When flexibility is improved, the body is then stronger and less susceptible to injury.
Does yoga provide a cardio workout?
Yes. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is built on the principle of movement coordinated with breath and intention. The classes are challenging and designed to bring heat to the body, increasing heart rate and circulation. If you run, cycle, or engage in other aerobic activity, you’ll experience something entirely different in your yoga class. Many will even find that yoga perfectly complements their present fitness regime. Regardless of what draws people to yoga, it is often the unique combination of stimulation and relaxation that fuels their return.
What should I bring to class?
A mat, towel and water bottle are all that you need. Remember not to eat before class, giving yourself 2-3 hours to digest your last meal prior to starting your practice. Light, stretchy clothing (nothing too tight or restrictive) will help you to remain cool and comfortable.
What should I expect to feel like after my first class?
Each student’s first yoga experience will be unique. Because classes are invigorating and warm, students often feel energized, having released toxins and increased circulation. In the days following practice (if new to yoga or working to a deeper level), it is not uncommon to feel muscles stiffen or become moderately sore. Remember that yoga’s dedicated following is largely due to the way it makes people feel. Our goal is to see to it that you leave each class feeling better than when you came in.
