Since 2003, Cecily has been a student of the Ashtanga vinyasa yoga tradition, refining a dedicated, advanced practice with guidance from senior teachers. Her introduction to yoga came from Jody Manley of Ashtanga Yoga Halifax. After a year studying with Jody, Cecily spent a summer in Sydney, where she discovered Yoga Moves, the Australian branch of AYRI (Ashtanga Yoga Reseach Institute), and attended her first Mysore-style class. After learning the primary series in this traditional manner, Cecily was officially hooked on vinyasa yoga. She returned to Ashtanga Yoga Halifax and cultivated a daily practice while completing her Master of Arts degree in Social Anthropology.
In 2007, Cecily returned to her hometown of Toronto and landed at the feet of Ron Reid and Diane Bruni of Downward Dog Yoga Centre. Since then, her practice has continued to deepen and evolve. Cecily received her instructor’s certification from Downward Dog, where the compassionate and intelligent approach to teaching has made it one of Canada’s most respected and renowned studios. In an effort to constantly refine her practice and approach to teaching, Cecily has attended workshops with world-class instructors Tim Miller, David Williams, Mark Darby, Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller, as well as Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini.
In both her studio classes and private lessons, Cecily approaches yoga from a holistic perspective, acknowledging that the pursuit of strength, balance and flexibility - both in yoga and in everyday life – is unique to each individual. Her yoga experience is complemented with a background in ballet and an academic career focused on health and well-being. As both student and instructor, Cecily is most at home on her yoga mat, where mindfulness, creativity and compassion thrive.
